James Wellbeloved Adult Turkey review

James Wellbeloved Adult Turkey lists turkey as its one animal protein source, and its 15 kg bag beat the 12 kg on price when I checked. I think it's a fair middle choice, with one word in its name I'd ignore.

7.6 out of 10

A plain, clearly labelled dry food with named ingredients and more protein than Pedigree Adult Complete. My score is an opinion from the label and store pages, and buy the 15 kg bag rather than the 12 kg.

My opinion from labels, prices and named tests, not a feeding trial. Pavel Ryzhikh, 3 November 2026.

A 30 kg neutered dog gets through about 147 kg of this food a year, a little under 10 of the 15 kg bags. At £52.49 a bag (£3.50/kg) on zooplus.co.uk, read on 2 November 2026, that's about £515.

Here's how I got there. The Merck Veterinary Manual's formula gives 1,436 kcal a day (70 x 30^0.75 x 1.6). Zooplus states 3,560 kcal/kg for this food, and Pets at Home states the same energy. That works out at about 403 g a day, so one bag lasts about 37 days. Merck warns that one animal can need as much as 30% more or less than another of the same weight, and the pet cost calculator will redo the sum for your dog.

I haven't fed this to a dog. The review comes from the label, store pages and named sources. The 7.6 is my opinion of what those show.

Buy the big bag

The price ladder is odd. Checked 2 November 2026 on zooplus.co.uk, the 12 kg bag cost more in total than the 15 kg bag. Read that again before you pick the middle size. On Pets at Home the same day, both the one-time and the subscribe-and-save price for 15 kg sat above the zooplus figure, so it pays to compare before you order.

What's in it

The list opens with dried turkey protein at 24%, then naked oats, brown rice at 13%, white rice at 13% and barley. Further down come whole linseed, poultry fat, sugar beet pulp and turkey gravy. Named ingredients with percentages are the thing I like most here. Compare that with Pedigree's "meat and animal derivatives", which could be several things.

Protein is 24.3 %, fat 11.1 % and fibre 3 %. These are the store's stated values, and no lab of mine has checked them.

The page also lists yucca extract, which it says reduces stool odour. I have no data on that and no wish to gather any.

The word I'd ignore

The name says hypoallergenic. Zooplus's page says that means one animal protein source and no beef, pork, soya, wheat, wheat gluten, dairy or eggs. That's a useful list of exclusions if you're reading labels. It isn't a diagnosis or a treatment, and it's the maker's own wording.

Poultry fat, turkey gravy and fish oil are on the ingredient list too. So "one protein source" doesn't mean one animal ingredient. If your dog has a diagnosed food problem, take the full list to your vet, who can decide whether this fits.

Against its neighbours

On calories it sits next to Pedigree Adult Complete, at 3,560 kcal/kg against 3,530 kcal/kg. Protein is higher here, 24.3 % against 20 %. Per calorie, James Wellbeloved comes to £0.98 per 1,000 kcal and Pedigree to £0.69 per 1,000 kcal.

Royal Canin Maxi Adult is the other obvious rival, with more calories per kilo at 3,941 kcal/kg and £1.08 per 1,000 kcal at the price read. The full field is in the large-dog value roundup.

Portions

Its feeding table gives 300 to 330 g a day for a 25 kg dog on 1 to 3 hours of activity, and 345 to 380 g for 3 hours or more. The Merck sum for a 25 kg neutered dog comes to about 352 g. So the pack's lower line runs below the formula, and it's a fair place to start a less active dog. Weigh the portion, then watch the dog. Labrador owners can follow the whole sum in what a Labrador costs to feed each year.

Reviews lean positive: 4.6 out of 5 from 63 on zooplus.co.uk, and 5 out of 5 from 12 on Pets at Home. Those are customers' opinions, and small samples. You can see the bag's full spec on its product page.

Why I'd buy it

  • Ingredients are named, with percentages for the turkey and rice
  • More protein than Pedigree Adult Complete, with similar calories
  • Two UK stores state the same calories and composition

What stops me

  • The word hypoallergenic is the maker's claim, and it's no substitute for a vet's advice
  • Poultry fat, turkey gravy and fish oil are on the list too, so one protein source doesn't mean one animal ingredient
  • The bag sizes are priced oddly, so the middle size can be a trap
