What a Maine Coon costs in a year
PDSA gives the Maine Coon an average weight of 7 kg and a lifespan of 12 to 15 years. I think food choice is the biggest line you can still change once the cat is home.

Guide on the Food line of the bill.

Food, routine health and litter for a 7 kg neutered Maine Coon come to about £681 a year on dry food, or about £1,256 on pouches alone, at the prices read on 2 November 2026 and shown below. Insurance and vet treatment for illness aren't in either figure.
I built that from a formula, store labels and charity tables, all named below. I haven't kept or fed a Maine Coon for this. PDSA's breed page says a Maine Coon costs £13,600 to £16,900 over a lifetime of 12 to 15 years, with no date on that page. Divide each end by its lifespan and you get about £1,130 a year, with set-up costs folded in. That's my division, not PDSA's.
How much it eats
PDSA prints an average weight of 7 kg. Purina's UK breed page gives 4.8 to 8.2 kg. The Merck Veterinary Manual's formula for a neutered adult cat is 70 x kg^0.75 x 1.2, which gives 361 kcal a day at 7 kg. Merck adds that one animal may need as much as 30% more or less, so weigh yours.
I've priced two foods, both read on Pets at Home on 2 November 2026: Purina ONE at £16.79 for 3 kg (£5.60/kg, 3,682 kcal/kg), and Felix pouches at £15 for 40 (£4.41/kg, 750 kcal/kg). The calorie figures are the store's statement.
Cat weight | kcal a day | Purina ONE a year | Felix a year |
|---|---|---|---|
4.8 kg, Purina's low end | 272 | 27 kg, about £151 | 133 kg, about £585 |
7 kg, PDSA's average | 361 | 36 kg, about £201 | 176 kg, about £776 |
8.2 kg, Purina's high end | 407 | 40 kg, about £226 | 198 kg, about £874 |
Purina ONE's table agrees with the sum: 85 to 115 g a day for a 6 to 8 kg cat, and the formula says 98 g at 7 kg. Felix's table stops at 5 kg. So at 7 kg you're on your own, at about 5.7 pouches a day and 52 boxes a year. That's a lot of recycling.
An intact cat runs higher, at 1.4 x resting energy in Merck's table, which puts Purina ONE at about £234. The pouches-versus-kibble gap is covered in wet vs dry, the yearly sum.
The rest of the bill
Battersea's cat page was updated on 6 July 2026 but puts no separate date on its costs, and its table isn't breed-specific. I've used its figures unchanged.
Line | A year | Where from |
|---|---|---|
Food | about £201 dry, about £776 wet | Above |
Fleas, worming, vaccinations, yearly vet check | £180 | Battersea: £10 a month plus £60 |
Litter | £300 | Battersea: £20 to £30 a month, middle used |
Total | about £681 dry, about £1,256 wet |
|
I've left insurance blank. Which?, on 29 July 2025, reported Go Compare's average cat premium at £9.08 a month from quotes between 1 January and 18 May 2025. Battersea's table says £24 and Cats Protection says £25 to £50, and that gap is the point. Those are all cats, not this breed. Get your own quote, because yours will differ.
Battersea's whole-cat figure on that page is about £1,500 a year. Cats Protection, whose page shows no date, says over £1,000. PDSA's minimum for any cat, calculated in 2024, is £79 a month, or £948 a year. Battersea's and PDSA's figures include insurance and mine doesn't, so a policy would close part of the gap with my dry total.
Costs you pay once
Buying the cat is where sources disagree most. PDSA's breed page gives an average purchase cost of £450. Cats Protection says pedigree cats such as Maine Coons can cost £800 to £2,000. Neither figure carries a date, and I couldn't reconcile them.
Set-up is about £366 by PDSA's 2024 sum, excluding the cat. Battersea's one-off list adds up to £232.50. First-year kit for a cat, priced goes through it item by item.
What the sum can't see
The coat costs time more than money. PDSA says it needs daily attention to reduce knots, and Purina's page says the same in fewer words. Battersea lists grooming tools at £10.
PDSA names hip dysplasia, patellar luxation and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy as possible health problems for the breed. I have no treatment costs for those and I won't guess. Ask your vet what they'd expect, and read any policy's terms before assuming it pays.
