What a French Bulldog costs in a year

PDSA puts a French Bulldog at 11 to 12.5 kg, above the 10 kg limit on one of the two small-breed foods priced here. I'd budget for food first, then ask a vet which food fits.

Guide on the Food line of the bill.

Drawing for the article: What a French Bulldog costs in a year

Food, routine health, poo bags and treats for an 11.75 kg neutered French Bulldog come to about £990 to £1,066 a year before insurance, at the prices read on 2 November 2026 and shown below. PDSA's breed page gives a minimum of £70 a month, or £840 a year, and over £12,000 across a lifetime, with no date on that page. Those two aren't the same sum. PDSA's cost page lists insurance among its monthly items and mine leaves it out. Its list has no treats line, though, and mine adds £240. I also priced two small-breed bags, which is more than the least you could spend.

The working is below, from store labels, a veterinary formula and charity tables. I haven't kept or fed a Frenchie for this. Treat the opinions as opinions.

The food line, and a catch

PDSA prints an average weight of 11 to 12.5 kg, so I've used the middle. The Merck Veterinary Manual's formula for a neutered adult dog is 70 x kg^0.75 x 1.6, which comes to 711 kcal a day. Merck warns any one animal may need as much as 30% more or less. On the Royal Canin bag that swing alone takes the year from about £277 to about £514.

Prices were read on zooplus.co.uk on 2 November 2026, and the calories are as the store states them.

Now the catch. Zooplus describes Royal Canin Mini Adult as for small breed adults up to 10 kg. James Wellbeloved's feeding table on the same store also stops at 10 kg. PDSA's Frenchie sits above both. Both are sold as small-breed foods, but neither page gives a figure for the average dog of this breed. Ask your vet what they'd feed before you commit to a year of it.

Pack size changes the sum too. The 8 kg Royal Canin bag costs less per kilo on the same zooplus page. James Wellbeloved is sold as a 1.5 kg bag or a three-pack, and at 71 kg a year that's about 47 bags. I'd want a bigger sack. Best-value dry food for small dogs compares more options.

PDSA also says Frenchies can put on weight easily, which makes breathing and exercise harder, and that your vet can tell you how much to feed. So use my kilos for budgeting and your vet's for the bowl.

The rest of the bill

Battersea's dog page was updated on 13 October 2026, and its table calls itself "costings at the time of writing". I've used its lines as printed. They aren't breed-specific.

The range comes from the two foods. It sits under Battersea's own whole-dog figure of about £1,800 to £2,000 a year, from a table that also lists insurance and grooming. Battersea's food line, £120 to £600, assumes £24 for a 12 kg bag. That's far below these two small-breed bags per kilo, and food is the line you can move most.

I've left grooming out. PDSA lists the coat as short, and Battersea's £240 to £600 is for professional grooming you may not need. Pet sitting is out as well: £390 to £1,200 by Battersea's count, if you need it.

PDSA's small-dog set-up cost, calculated in 2024, is £415, without the dog or the microchip.

Insurance is where the breed shows

I've left this line blank. Battersea says flat-faced breeds like bulldogs generally cost more to insure, and PDSA says of Frenchies that their flat faces can often cause breathing problems. I read no average premium for a French Bulldog.

For scale, Which? reported on 29 July 2025 that Go Compare's quotes from 1 January to 18 May 2025 averaged £13.13 a month for a pedigree dog and £7.90 for a mongrel. Battersea's table says £20 to £60. Those are wide apart, and neither is your dog. Get your own quote, because yours will differ.

The cost I can't put a figure on

PDSA is blunt about this breed. It recommends considering a different breed or a cross-breed to reduce some of the problems Frenchies have, and it names brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome. It also says flat-faced breeds can suffer from reflux or struggle to swallow, and sends you to your vet for that.

I have no treatment costs for any of it, so none appear in my total. Start with what a routine vet year costs, then ask a vet what a Frenchie adds.
